GETFund to release funds to scholarship secretariat
The scholarship secretariat of Ghana is to receive its share of funds allocated to the Secretariat by the state as stated in the GETFund law.
Act 581,2000, Section 2(2b) states: “to provide supplementary funding to the Scholarship Secretariat for the grant of scholarships of gifted but needy students for studies in the second-cycle and accredited tertiary institutions in Ghana“.
The news was announced by the Registrar, Kingsley Agyemang, when he delivered a speech at a forum in Kumasi on the theme, “Empowering Ashanti Youth, the role of scholarships”.
The forum was chaired by Nana Appiah Menkah, a founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as well as Chairman of the Council of elders of the party.
Mr. Agyemang announced that one of the major achievements chalked within the short period of his administration has been to secure the release of funds by GETFund as dictated by the law to fund scholarships.
“I must add that for nearly 10 years GETFund under our political opponents reneged on their obligation to release funds to the scholarship secretariat leaving the secretariat cash trapped and virtually on its knees. Not even a pesewa was released to support the administration of scholarships during the period referred to, a clear violation of the GETFund law”, he said.
He further assured that a process of restoration has begun and therefore there’s hope that the Secretariat would empower the youth through the scholarship for self-development.
The Registrar further urged the youth of Ghana not only to seek for the information from the Secretariat but to also adequately prepare themselves to enjoy the various scholarship opportunities in Ghana.
Mr. Agyemang mentioned the various scholarships administered by the Secretariat as MASTESS, Presidential awards, Northern scholarship and the Free SHS scholarships at the second cycle level.
Scholarship at the tertiary level include a year abroad for language students, Thesis and Bursary for Post graduate students, bilateral scholarships based on country corporation agreement, Commonwealth scholarships and Government Scholarship tenable overseas.
Mr. Agyemang advised the youth who were made up of selected students from all the tertiary institutions across the region to take advantage of the many scholarship opportunities.
The Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Bosiako advised the youth to study hard to enjoy from the scholarship opportunities available.
Present at the programme were some Members of Parliament, MMDCEs. Representatives of executive of the political parties and TESCON executives across the region.
Raphael Patrick Sarfo, an Ashanti Regional Youth Organiser and convener of the forum, thanked the Registrar and his team for honoring the invitation.
